Pipeline between Uganda-Tanzania closer to becoming a reality

With Tanzania announcing that it has completed geophysical and geological research, the construction of the Uganda-Tanzania pipeline appears to be on the verge of becoming a reality. It was announced by Tanzania's Energy minister, Dr Calemani, who tried to quell rumors that the project might not see the light of dawn.

The Minister, accompanied by Dar Es Salaam and Ugandan President Mulroney, addressed the media.

1400 km pipeline

When completed, the pipeline will extend from Hoima, Uganda, to the Tanzanian port of Tanga on the East African coast, more than 1400 km away and is expected to cost $4 billion.

It is expected that 70% of the project will be funded by Uganda and Tanzania, with the rest coming from Tullo and CNOOC.

Africa's fourth largest crude oil reserves

The Homa to Tanga crude oil pipeline will deliver crude oil from Uganda to the East African port town of Tanga. Uganda has the fourth largest crude oil reserves ever found on the African continent, behind Nigeria, Angola and South Sudan.

At present, the proven reserves are 6.5 billion barrels/day.

Hot oil pipeline

Due to the stickiness of Ugandan crude oil, pipes with a diameter of 24 inches must be heated to make it easier for crude oil to flow, making it the longest electrothermal pipeline in the world. Uganda's decision to choose the Tanga route was made after Kenya strongly lobbied through its country to build a pipeline through the Lokichar to the port city of Lamu, where it also found oil.

Since then, Kenya has decided to carry out the project on its own.
